It’s my belief that Phil Ivey is the best poker player in the world, and that includes every format. I’ve played live with him, and cash, Hold’em, Stud, Omaha, whatever, and he is just the most consistently good player at everything – include online based on what his results look like. I don’t think anyone has won more money online, live play, or tournament poker, than Ivey. Pretty strong.

Isildur could easily have over $10 million now on Full Tilt if he had better game selection and if he didn’t play six, seven, or eight games at the same time against Phil Ivey and Durrrr. He’s a great player, but you need everything; you need money management.

Poker players can agree on nothing. So the fact they do agree on Phil Ivey is a rare circumstance. Phil Ivey has a sixth sense like all good poker players do, but he has like a sixth-and-half sense. He has the ability to read situations better than the next person. In poker it’s hard to say anybody’s the best, but yeah, they’re pretty unanimous. Hardly anybody says, ‘Ah, he gets lucky.’ Everyone agrees he is the best.

It’s no coincidence that Patrik Antonius, Phil Ivey and a lot these really, really top players are in excellent physical condition. They’re in great shape, they eat healthily and I’m sure many of them have mental coaches, sparring partners of some kind. [..] I think in the next three to four years the players that will be successful will be those who are treating poker as a sport and taking it as serious as the top footballers and athletes.

Is there really a best poker player in the world? I don’t think so. It is much like saying, ‘Is there a best artist in the world?’. Poker is too much art to have a best player. A list of great players could be written, but the word ‘best’ shouldn’t be used. No offense to Phil Ivey, but I would use the term ‘amazing’ to describe him.
